I use my work as a way to examine our complicated relationship with the natural world.
The primary structure of this examination is that of the painted landscape. Historically, this durable construct has allowed artists to interpret and record the natural world in countless ways. As a traditional genre, landscape painting has a fair amount of baggage. As a painter, I have to sort through and index this baggage very carefully with each new body of work. To do this I rely on art historical research and direct observation of nature.
Hopefully, what remains in the mind of a viewer after looking at my work is a deep connection with our common memory of the natural world.
